For my thesis project I chose to focus on the discrimination of womens’ ethnic hair in the work place . Charlotte has had a non-discrimination law since 1981 but has never specifically addressed race. The CROWN Act, which stands for "Creating a Respectable and Open World for Natural Hair,” was first introduced back in 2019 and was passed in seven states not including North Carolina. It wasn’t until August 2021 when language about the non-discrimination of ethnic hair was added. While this is a big step in the right direction it is now important that businesses and employers take time to practice these laws. This project will bring awareness to the issue and help inform the community of their rights to not be discriminated against. It will also inform businesses on why being able to wear natural hair in professional settings is important.
